Sensuous Smells
Smell is one of the most overlooked senses in wedding design.
It's the oldest of our five senses, and o of the strongest because it connects
directly to the brain. Here's how to harness the power of smell and use it to create impact.
- Scent Your Programs. Lightly scent your programs with an essence or tie them
with a fragrant, meaningful herb or flowers. It is a subtle way to create an impression.
Choose rosemary (for remembrance), sweet basil (for good wishes and love), honeysuckle
(for the bonds of love), or lavender (for devotion).
- Design a Scented Bouquet. Of course you care how it looks. But don't you also
care how it smells. Consider adding flowers or herbs to your bouquet that create
a delightful fragrance.
- Offer scented finger cloths. If you're passing hors d'oeuvres, one great
way to incorporate a light scent while providing a thoughtful service is to offer your
guests chilled damp cloths for cleaning their hands. To create these, simply take heavy
weight paper towels, moisten in scented water (mint and lemon are two of my favorites)
and freeze. Have wait staff butler pass these unexpected helpers at the close of the
cocktail hour.
- Lightly Scent candles. Burning votives or pillars with a subtle scent are a
great way to create mood. They are a nice touch in at the wedding ceremony, or in an
attended bathroom at the reception. One caution, keep scented candles away from food as
they can compete with the aromas of your meal.
