Feathering the Nest: Preparing for a Family
According to Alan Segal of Raleigh OB/GYN Center, “Its
very reasonable to schedule a preconception visit with your OB/GYN.
At the appointment, you’ll discuss medical history, work
and environmental exposure, and exposure to substances like cigarettes,
drugs and alcohol.” Before your appointment both you and
your spouse should talk with family members about any history
of birth defects, cystic fibrosis or other medical conditions.
It’s important to paint a clear genetic picture. It will
help your doctor to give you the best possible care.
Dr. Segal also recommends that women considering pregnancy
begin taking a multi-vitamin. “You need to choose a multi-vitamin
with at least 400 mcg of folic acid. You don’t need a separate
folic acid supplement. Most women’s one a day vitamins
and even Flintstones chewables have the right amount of folic
acid.” Dr. Segal also advises patients who smoke or drink
socially to stop, and to phase out caffeine as well. If you don’t
have a regular exercise routine, now is the time to begin one.
You can’t start a regimen once you’re pregnant but
you can continue any exercise you begin before conception.
By planning ahead and working with your doctor before conception,
you ensure that you’re new addition receives the best possible
prenatal care.
